Slick and Rose – Objects in the Mirror
C Flux Album Covers
This is an Oldie but Goodie for me. HA. This cd cover design was for a R&B group (my first one) by the name of “Slick & Rose”. I knew them on a personal level for years so it was a no-brainer when they decided to roll with my talent for their debut Album!
They provided the two pictures I used. The one in front of the door and the one on the stairs. The other pics I took myself at with a last minute idea change. I borrowed the mirror heart locket from a friend of mine and hit the streets. I chose to use the concrete as a background because although Slick & Rose is an R&B/Soul group, they have roots in Hip-Hop as well. Their sound has Hip-Hop elements to it and I wanted to give that contrast of rugged and smooth. You know… like M.O.P. HAA.
The concept was for them to be lost and found at the same damn time. Objects in the mirror are them. They are observing themselves in the mirror and discovering who they are. Something we all experience. There is a sense of, “Who am I?… I’m not perfect… I’m a good person”, etc. So, the locket being lost on the ground, or forgotten or found… discovered represents that.
What sealed the concept for me was to actually put them in the mirror. It was fortunate that the locket was in the shape of a heart. That was an unexpected solution if you will. Something that came out of the universe because I didn’t think about a heart shaped mirror. It brought an idea of care and it couldn’t have worked out any better.
So I took the pictures not knowing how they would come out. This was a time when I didn’t have a digital camera and going to get film developed was still the main method. Spent my doe and got it done. When I got em back I was pleased. I got the shots I wanted. Took it to Photoshop and got busy. The result was real clean, nice and simple. Slick & Rose was excited about it so that sealed it for me. I just wanted to cover to connect well to what they were expressing through song.
